Cover Cropping on Vegetable Beds: Novel Equipment and Ideas
Dr Eric Brennan USDA-ARS
Cover cropping on beds provides many benefits & novel management options for vegetable farmers. Eric Brennan highlights efforts to develop & evaluate NOVEL EQUIPMENT for bedded cover crops at the USDA-ARS in Salinas California. This reduces seeding rates, & improves weed control, mowing, & residue management. It also allows selective mowing in cover crop mixtures of rye and vetch. This approach may increase cover crop adoption in vegetable systems. -Cover crops can provide many benefits (nitrate scavenging, weed suppression & on-farm carbon production) that improve the sustainability of high-value, high-input vegetables systems. |

One option is buckwheat, which is the focus of a new video that provides guidance on sowing, management, and how to best terminate the cover crop. Some of the advantages of buckwheat include rapid growth, strong weed suppression and quick breakdown of residues, allowing it to fit into tight rotations and certain crops like baby leaf. Visit the Soil Wealth website for information on cover cropping in Australian vegetable farms. |
